Before and after of a fogged sliding patio door glass panel replaced
Foggy sliding patio door

Common causes

  • A dirty track: grit, pet hair and debris build up and make the rollers drag.
  • Worn or seized rollers: rollers wear flat, crack or stop turning, so the door scrapes along the track.
  • Rollers set too low: the door sits on the track instead of rolling over it.
  • A bent or damaged track: a dent or chipped rail creates a bump the door catches on.
  • Settling: houses shift with frost and settling, which can put the door out of level.
  • Weatherstripping or the lock: worn seals can drag, and a misaligned latch can make the door hard to close.

What to try first

  1. Vacuum the track and wipe it clean.
  2. Spray a little silicone lubricant on the track. Avoid oil or grease, which collect dirt.
  3. Look for adjustment screws at the bottom edge of the door panel. Turning them slightly can raise the door off the track.
  4. In winter, check for ice in the track. Don’t force a frozen door.

When to call a pro

If the door still drags, the rollers are probably worn and need replacing. That usually means lifting the panel out of its frame. Patio door panels are heavy and awkward, so it’s a job for two people with the right tools. We clean the track, replace the rollers and adjust the door so it glides and locks properly.

What it costs

Patio door roller repairs typically cost $199–$290 per door, installed. Handle and lock repairs start from $149. If the glass in the door is foggy, we can replace just the glass unit too. See patio door repair and patio door glass replacement.

Common questions

Can patio door rollers be replaced without a new door?

Yes. Rollers are a replaceable part. The panel is lifted out, the old rollers are swapped and the door is re-hung and adjusted.

How long does a roller repair take?

Most roller repairs are done in a single visit.

Why does my patio door only stick in winter?

Ice in the track, frost movement in the house and stiff, cold weatherstripping can all make it worse in winter. If it sticks year-round, the rollers are likely worn.
