When glass-only replacement makes sense
Replacing just the glass is the right repair when the problem is the glass itself and the rest of the window is sound:
- Fog or moisture between the panes (a failed seal)
- Cracked, chipped or broken glass
- The frame is solid, square and opens, closes and locks properly, or only needs a hardware fix
When a new window may be the better choice
- Wood frames with rot, or vinyl frames that are warped or cracked
- A frame so far out of square that the sash won’t close or seal
- You want a different style, size or opening type
If you’re not sure, send us a photo. We’ll tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense. Our guide on window repair vs replacement covers the trade-offs.
What can be matched
- Double or triple pane. We match what you have. Moving from double to triple pane depends on whether your frame can hold the thicker unit, and we check that when we measure.
- Low-E coating and argon gas come standard in our replacement units.
- Grids between the glass can usually be matched to your other windows.
- Tempered safety glass where it’s required, such as patio doors and glass near floors or doors.
- Obscure (privacy) glass for bathrooms.
How the process works
- Price: use See my price or send a photo for an estimate.
- Measure: we take exact measurements of the glass unit.
- Make: your new unit is made in Edmonton, usually in 2 to 3 weeks. If the glass is broken, we can board up the opening in the meantime.
- Install: we remove the old unit and install the new one in your existing frame, typically 20 to 30 minutes per window.
What it costs
Sealed glass units start from about $300 each, with a $500 minimum for installed jobs. A single unit typically costs $500–$1,270 installed, compared with about $1,650–$3,200 per opening for a full window replacement. See the full price guide.
Common questions
Will the new glass match my other windows?
Clear glass with the same pane count looks the same as your other windows. We also match grids and privacy glass where needed.
Can I upgrade from double to triple pane?
Sometimes. Triple-pane units are thicker, so it depends on how deep your frame’s glass pocket is. We check when we measure.
Can you replace the glass in a patio door too?
Yes. We replace the sealed unit inside the existing patio door panel, so the frame and track stay in place. See patio door glass replacement.
