How laminated security glass works

Regular window glass breaks into large, sharp pieces and leaves an open hole. Laminated glass is made of two layers of glass bonded to a strong plastic interlayer. When it’s hit, the glass cracks in a web pattern, but the interlayer holds the pieces together and keeps the opening closed. Getting through takes repeated blows, time and noise, which is exactly what deters a break-in.

Laminated vs tempered vs regular glass

Glass typeWhen it breaksBest for
Regular (annealed)Large, sharp pieces and an open holeStandard windows
TemperedShatters into small, dull pieces and the opening is left clearSafety where people could fall into the glass
LaminatedCracks but stays in one piece, held together by the interlayerSecurity, noise reduction and UV protection

Where it makes the most sense

  • Basement and ground-floor windows
  • Patio door glass
  • Glass in and beside entry doors (sidelites), especially near the lock
  • Windows hidden from the street, such as along side yards and back lanes
  • Replacing glass after a break-in, so it’s harder the next time

Extra benefits

  • Less outside noise: the interlayer dampens sound.
  • UV protection: laminated glass blocks most of the sun’s UV rays, which helps reduce fading.
  • Safer if broken: pieces stay attached instead of falling out.

Installed in your existing frames

We build a new sealed glass unit with a laminated pane and install it in your existing window or door frame, so there’s no need for a new window. Laminated units are slightly thicker, so we check your frame when we measure. Security glass is priced by size and quoted after we see the window. Use See my price and choose “Not sure,” or send us a photo.

Common questions

Is security glass unbreakable?

No glass is unbreakable. Laminated glass is designed to crack but stay in one piece, which makes getting through much harder and slower.

Does laminated glass look different from regular glass?

No. It looks like regular clear glass.

Can you put security glass in my existing windows?

Usually, yes. We replace the glass with a laminated sealed unit in your existing frame. Laminated units are a little thicker, so we check the frame first.
